Many activities in the water and along the water's edge are regulated by local, state, and federal agencies. Some types of small shoreline erosion control projects, and especially those that employ bioengineering techniques, may be eligible for "regional permits" that do not require extensive review by state and federal regulatory agencies. Before committing to a specific type of shoreline erosion project, consult these agencies for advice on what techniques might work best in your situation, and special limitations that may apply to your project.
In northeastern Illinois, a joint application process to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources has been established to expedite preparation and review of permit applications. The application checklist, application instructions, and the application form are available for download from the Web.
You should also consult with your local office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service regarding the potential for impacts to rare and endangered species. Your county Soil and Water Conservation District should be consulted regarding soil erosion control plans associated with your project, and your local county stormwater management agency may also provide useful information.
